How Roxanne's Pokémon Story Mirrors Women's Struggles & Progress (RSE)

In honor of Women's History Month, we’re diving into the influential roles women have played in the core Pokémon games. From strong Pokemon Trainers to Gym Leaders and Elite Four members, women have helped shape the Pokémon world we know today. Join us as we explore how these female characters were not only shaped by the times they were introduced but also reflected the roles, challenges, and triumphs of women in the real world. We travel across the land to meet the very first Gym Leader in Hoenn. It's time for Roxanne, "The Rock-loving Honors Student!"

Gym Leader Roxanne - Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire

"Hello, I am Roxanne, the Rustboro Pokémon Gym Leader. I became a Gym Leader so that I may apply what I learned at the Pokemon Trainer's School in battle. Would you kindly demonstrate how you battle, and with which Pokemon?"

Roxanne specializes in Rock-type Pokémon and serves as the first Gym Leader in the Hoenn region. Roxanne’s use of Rock-type Pokémon in Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire symbolize endurance, resilience, and unyielding strength. These qualities have historically been associated with masculinity. As a young, studious woman who is both a teacher and a Gym Leader, Roxanne embodies the growing presence of women in academic and leadership roles, fields where they have traditionally faced barriers. Roxanne, by being both a teacher and a Gym Leader, represents a woman who seeks both knowledge and power. Her affinity for Rock-types suggests that she is not only strong-willed but also determined to challenge the notion that intelligence and authority are exclusive to men. 

Additionally, Roxanne’s strategic and methodical approach to battle reflects the expectations placed on women to be precise, disciplined, and highly competent in order to gain recognition. Rock-types, often perceived as slow but steady, mirror how women have had to persist and endure obstacles in male-dominated spaces, particularly in academia and the workforce. Roxanne's Geodude

Geodude's Pokedex entry in Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire speaks to women’s perseverance in climbing societal and professional ladders, often without recognition. Geodude’s ability to ascend difficult terrain through sheer effort parallels how women have had to work harder than men to gain respect and leadership roles. When we discussed Clair, we discovered how after defeating her in a Gym Battle, her demand for us to complete a challenge in the Dragon's Den represented this frustration of women having to go above and beyond to obtain and continue to prove their leadership compared to men. Roxanne, being both an educator and a Gym Leader, embodies the idea that women must prove their competence repeatedly to be acknowledged. Furthermore, the comparison of Geodude to overlooked rocks suggests that women’s progress is sometimes invisible until they make undeniable breakthroughs.

Geodude's Tackle represents Roxanne’s determination and willingness to push forward despite resistance, much like how women have had to prove their competence repeatedly in academic and career settings. Defense Curl reflects the defensive strategies women often employ in male-dominated fields, where they must be cautious, adaptable, and resilient to criticism or societal pressures that discourage assertiveness. Rock Throw represents active resistance, symbolizing how women have had to push back against systemic barriers while proving their strength in competitive spaces.

Rock Tomb represents a defensive and strategic tool. Throughout history, women have had to navigate strict societal expectations regarding behavior, career aspirations, and family roles. Rather than direct confrontation, many women used subtle and strategic methods to secure their place in society. Rock Tomb, which traps and slows down opponents, symbolize how women have sometimes intentionally slowed down or restricted societal change in order to ensure stability and avoid backlash. Instead of aggressively dismantling barriers, they often worked within the existing system, carefully choosing battles that allowed for gradual progress.

Women in the workplace and academia have had to set clear personal and professional boundaries to protect themselves from societal pressures. Rock Tomb represents the way women have created structured limits, whether by negotiating workplace roles, navigating traditional family expectations, or redefining femininity on their own terms. Rather than allowing themselves to be overrun by external pressures, they use methods that slow down and control the pace of change to ensure they can move forward without being completely overwhelmed.

Together, these moves highlight Roxanne’s role as a symbol of perseverance and intelligence, showing that women, like her Rock-type Pokémon, must rely on strategic thinking, patience, and unwavering determination to overcome societal challenges.

Roxanne's Nosepass

Nosepass carries strong symbolism in relation to women. Nosepass resembles a compass, a tool for guidance and direction. A compass is a fitting choice for Roxanne as a teacher, as she represents guidance for the next generation, similar to how Lapras did for Lorelei back in Pokemon RBY.

Nosepass Pokedex entry aligns with the gradual progress of women throughout history. While from a surface-level perspective, it may seem like change is not happening, closer examination reveals that small but meaningful advancements are taking place. Women have historically faced significant obstacles in achieving leadership positions and workplace equality, but just like Nosepass’s subtle movement, societal shifts, though slow, continue to push forward in an irreversible direction. Roxanne, as a young female Gym Leader, represents this kind of steady but undeniable progress toward breaking gender norms.

Roxanne’s Nosepass and its moveset in Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire is a double down on the strategies and challenges women in have historically faced in asserting themselves within rigid societal structures. Tackle continues to represent women's persistence, meanwhile Rock Throw is active resistance and push back against systemic barriers.

Harden, replacing Defense Curl, symbolizes the defensive and endurance-based strategies women have used to maintain their positions. Just as Nosepass raises its Defense stat to withstand attacks, women have often had to cultivate patience, resilience, and adaptability to survive and succeed in traditional societal structures that resist change.

Rock Tomb, which reduces an opposing Pokemon's speed when contact is made, suggesting that women have learned to navigate and manipulate these constraints to their advantage, ensuring their long-term success rather than engaging in direct confrontation.

Roxanne's Nosepass embodies the struggle and perseverance of women, showing that progress often comes through resilience, strategic navigation, and gradual but undeniable movement forward, just like Nosepass, which may appear immobile but is always slowly advancing toward a new future.
