00:02:27.021 --> 00:02:32.122
Welcome to As the Pokeball Turns, where the stories are real and people still play this game.

00:02:32.414 --> 00:02:35.115
There's a saying that goes, rules are made to be broken.

00:02:35.412 --> 00:02:39.312
It is often used as an idea that rules can be disregarded or disobeyed.

00:02:39.608 --> 00:02:42.625
However, it's important to remember that rules exist for a reason.

00:02:42.921 --> 00:02:48.467
They establish order and give us the ability to live and function as a society in an otherwise chaotic world.

00:02:48.768 --> 00:02:52.978
When it comes to Wayfarer, there are a lot of rules for what is and isn't ineligible.

00:02:53.277 --> 00:03:01.587
In spite of what the Wayfarer guidelines say, that didn't stop my guest today from helping a paraplegic child obtain a Pokestop that they could spin from their house.

00:03:01.884 --> 00:03:08.502
Personally, I felt these guys deserve some Spotlight because on one hand they helped someone who has a disability be able to play Pokemon Go.

00:03:08.801 --> 00:03:14.014
Accessibility has been a criticism many have made about Niantic's games, particularly Pokemon Go.

00:03:14.312 --> 00:03:20.012
Many speak out about it and these guys used what they knew about Wayfarer and did something about it to help another person.

00:03:20.307 --> 00:03:26.038
On the other hand, they were able to create a house stop, which within the Wayfarer world is usually frowned upon.

00:03:26.335 --> 00:03:31.705
My podcast has always been about the stories, and this is one story I couldn't pass up when I heard about it.

00:03:32.002 --> 00:03:34.907
Here is their origin story into the world of Pokemon Go.

00:03:35.205 --> 00:03:39.467
This is Rt100Triathlete, DirtDiverG, and Syletl0.

00:03:40.646 --> 00:03:45.776
Welcome to As The Pokeball Turns, where the stories are real and people still play this game.

00:03:46.076 --> 00:03:47.661
I'm your host, David Hernandez.

00:03:47.977 --> 00:03:56.641
Before we dive into today's guest or guests in this case, if you have any Pokemon GO stories, send'em to my email at asthePokeBallTurns podcast@gmail.com.

00:03:56.947 --> 00:04:00.061
Again, it's asthepokeballturnspodcast@gmail.com.

00:04:00.372 --> 00:04:06.062
Your story might be recreated into a skit or you may be invited onto the show like these three gentlemen were today.

00:04:06.359 --> 00:04:07.313
Now let's get into it.

00:04:07.318 --> 00:04:08.574
I'm excited to get into this.

00:04:08.873 --> 00:04:11.981
So if you listen to the intro of the podcast, you know who these guys are.

00:04:12.507 --> 00:04:20.033
They went out of the way to nominate a stop for a paraplegic trainer, and here they are just tell the story of how it all happened, but let me introduce them all.

00:04:20.334 --> 00:04:21.884
Guys, why don't you introduce yourself real quick.

00:04:22.487 --> 00:04:23.567
Thanks for having us, David.

00:04:23.863 --> 00:04:25.153
My name is Matthew Tovar.

00:04:25.456 --> 00:04:32.141
I've been playing Pokemon Go since, it started, and then found a group of guys to play with in our church and been having fun ever since.

00:04:32.440 --> 00:04:34.120
My name's Jeff, uh, dirt Diver.

00:04:34.120 --> 00:04:40.411
G I've been playing like Matt since the very beginning, having a lot of fun and, kind of the same story, but I, I started on my own.

00:04:40.706 --> 00:04:41.456
My name's Rob.

00:04:41.757 --> 00:04:49.370
I actually started because dirt diver needed a friend, and so I jumped in and been playing pretty heavy since.

00:04:49.966 --> 00:04:50.627
That's awesome guys.

00:04:50.627 --> 00:04:56.283
So we're gonna dive into Pokemon Go stuff in a minute, but I'm gonna break my tradition for interviews for my audience, who knows.

00:04:56.584 --> 00:04:58.053
I wanna know how this all happened.

00:04:58.059 --> 00:05:04.201
So tell us the rundown about, you guys going to this person's house, nominating a stop and everything like just start from the beginning.

00:05:04.797 --> 00:05:05.576
Yeah, sure, David.

00:05:05.874 --> 00:05:11.341
All three of us and a few others, we help with that nomination approval through Wayfarer.

00:05:11.644 --> 00:05:15.971
I came across one day a nomination from an individual, it was rather sad.

00:05:16.271 --> 00:05:23.331
It was from this kid, his nomination was just of his bedroom and his explanation was, I'm a quadriplegic.

00:05:23.331 --> 00:05:28.879
I have a hard time getting around, I use a stylist in my mouth to play Pokemon Go because of my condition.

00:05:28.879 --> 00:05:34.394
even when I can get outta the house, I can only be out in a wheelchair for a few hours before needing to come back home.

00:05:34.690 --> 00:05:41.206
As the rules states in, Wayfarer, I immediately declined the nomination because you can't have something on private property like that.

00:05:41.504 --> 00:05:49.766
I took a screenshot of the details, specifically of his location and I shared it with the group of friends here that we have through our church group, that we play Pokemon Go with.

00:05:50.071 --> 00:05:53.387
We got together and said, oh man, we should, try to make a stop for this, guy.

00:05:53.687 --> 00:05:57.651
Jeff had the idea to go introduce himself and get the rundown on his story.

00:05:57.954 --> 00:06:04.194
Yeah, so I went down, talked to him, we knocked on the door and I think I met his sister and, and she's like, what are you trying to do?

00:06:04.199 --> 00:06:06.204
You know, everyone was kinda like, what, what's going on?

00:06:06.204 --> 00:06:06.324
And...

00:06:07.406 --> 00:06:13.904
we're just like, you know, we just wanna help him out, you know, be nice and he showed up and we talked about it a little bit and he was excited.

00:06:14.204 --> 00:06:24.584
You know, a private property wouldn't make it, but if we built a little library and this was Matt's idea, built a little library out in the right of way, we could actually call that a stop that would get approved.

00:06:24.887 --> 00:06:34.098
I like to build things and Rob likes to build things too and so we, kind of got together and said, we'll build you a little library, put it out in front of your house and nominate it for a stop.

00:06:34.394 --> 00:06:37.665
We ended up recruiting the youth at church to build the little library.

00:06:37.785 --> 00:06:37.995
Yeah.

00:06:37.995 --> 00:06:42.584
We got, we got some of the teenagers here at our church to help us out to build it and install it too.

00:06:42.584 --> 00:06:43.341
Wow, that's awesome.

00:06:43.341 --> 00:06:44.841
So it was like a church project basically.

00:06:44.841 --> 00:06:45.172
Yeah.

00:06:45.172 --> 00:06:46.341
Turn it into one for sure.

00:06:46.627 --> 00:06:52.584
it's been pretty fun and I think once we got it installed, all of us who were, of the level high enough nominated it.

00:06:53.154 --> 00:06:54.024
Several times.

00:06:54.555 --> 00:06:55.084
Many times.

00:06:55.435 --> 00:06:56.225
And appealed it too.

00:06:56.245 --> 00:06:56.904
And appealed it.

00:06:56.904 --> 00:06:57.175
Yeah.

00:06:57.180 --> 00:07:00.535
Cuz some of those are hard to get through, especially those little libraries.

00:07:00.831 --> 00:07:04.552
At least in my submissions, I always put the details of what's going on here.

00:07:04.848 --> 00:07:10.591
We weren't just trying to get a, a couch stop, as what they call it on the, uh, on the forum we were trying to help out this individual.

00:07:10.997 --> 00:07:13.158
You know, we got the good news about a month ago.

00:07:13.456 --> 00:07:16.036
Jeff's submission went through and, got approved.

00:07:16.096 --> 00:07:16.396
Yeah.

00:07:16.396 --> 00:07:17.776
After, after 11 months.

00:07:17.781 --> 00:07:18.456
After 11 months.

00:07:18.456 --> 00:07:18.737
Yeah.

00:07:19.016 --> 00:07:19.906
Oh my gosh.

00:07:20.026 --> 00:07:23.067
Did y'all just let it go naturally or was it upgraded or appealed?

00:07:23.716 --> 00:07:24.797
It was upgraded.

00:07:25.096 --> 00:07:25.706
Submitted.

00:07:26.567 --> 00:07:27.107
We submitted.

00:07:28.336 --> 00:07:28.547
Yeah.

00:07:28.547 --> 00:07:30.468
We, so my appeal finally went through.

00:07:30.497 --> 00:07:30.786
Yeah.

00:07:31.456 --> 00:07:32.927
Oh, so Niantic approved it?

00:07:32.927 --> 00:07:33.826
Yeah, they did.

00:07:33.831 --> 00:07:34.396
So it.

00:07:34.427 --> 00:07:35.117
that's awesome.

00:07:35.221 --> 00:07:39.252
It was a big deal to get that done and it happened right after they changed all the rules.

00:07:39.252 --> 00:07:40.271
So I'm wondering if that was a.

00:07:42.716 --> 00:07:43.797
So there's.

00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:53.100
Well, first off, I wanna say thank you Niantic, for approving this appeal, cuz That's just amazing just to hear that.

00:07:53.370 --> 00:07:56.910
But I wanna break it down a little bit so Matthew, you got the nomination, right?

00:07:56.910 --> 00:07:59.420
You're the one who saw the nomination of the kid was trying to, do,

00:07:59.764 --> 00:08:00.334
That's right.

00:08:00.334 --> 00:08:00.574
Yes.

00:08:00.579 --> 00:08:02.314
Saw it first and captured it.

00:08:02.689 --> 00:08:04.016
so my question is this.

00:08:04.021 --> 00:08:06.807
So when y'all read it, like, did y'all have any skepticism?

00:08:06.807 --> 00:08:14.307
Like maybe this person was just making it up, or did y'all just kind of knew that this was something that this is legit, this person needs our help, like, did y'all have a conversation like that?

00:08:14.906 --> 00:08:20.247
I was actually just telling Jeff this, right before we started this podcast, when he was saying, no, have you, do you know who this guy is?

00:08:20.247 --> 00:08:22.617
I'm like, no, but I just assumed the best in everybody.

00:08:26.757 --> 00:08:35.006
That's sort of what I did for this submission, it looked really honest and, and sincere and so, like I mentioned, talked with the guys and Jeff was free that day and went and met him.

00:08:35.006 --> 00:08:36.206
So it would end up being good.

00:08:36.807 --> 00:08:38.096
Now Jeff, you went by yourself?

00:08:38.679 --> 00:08:41.927
I actually had, uh, who was in the car with me, my family was in the car with me.

00:08:41.927 --> 00:08:44.147
I told them to wait out here while I go talk to this guy.

00:08:45.376 --> 00:08:45.736
Okay.

00:08:45.736 --> 00:08:46.037
That's good.

00:08:46.042 --> 00:08:47.866
At least you, at least you didn't go by yourself.

00:08:48.032 --> 00:08:48.361
Yes.

00:08:48.871 --> 00:08:49.231
Yeah.

00:08:49.231 --> 00:08:53.642
So I, no, I just went and it was good to meet him, I got his whole story and everything.

00:08:53.642 --> 00:08:58.861
He'd been in a car accident and it was something that changed his life quite a bit and we kind of talked about it.

00:08:58.861 --> 00:09:00.376
I got his friend code right there mm-hmm.

00:09:00.456 --> 00:09:01.537
And we joined up and, um,

00:09:02.096 --> 00:09:02.517
That's awesome.

00:09:02.517 --> 00:09:12.187
And it was really good to be able to help because a lot of the people in our group, our trainers are also like, pretty high level, so I was like, everyone go down there and nominate this stop as soon as you can.

00:09:12.192 --> 00:09:12.197
Mm-hmm.

00:09:12.278 --> 00:09:15.677
So we can all just, you know, kind of bombard it and get this one approved for'em.

00:09:16.552 --> 00:09:16.763
Wow.

00:09:16.763 --> 00:09:21.503
So y'all, I guess it sounds like it was multiple nominations from different people who nominated the stop to get it approved.

00:09:21.518 --> 00:09:21.727
Yeah.

00:09:22.207 --> 00:09:22.498
Yeah.

00:09:22.957 --> 00:09:24.937
Day one, I think we dropped three or four.

00:09:24.937 --> 00:09:27.457
Yeah, I did it and you did and a few other short.

00:09:28.072 --> 00:09:28.732
that's crazy.

00:09:28.822 --> 00:09:30.076
So Jeff, I wanna ask you this.

00:09:30.076 --> 00:09:33.460
So when you went to meet the guy, what was going through your mind when you met the kid, you know,

00:09:34.057 --> 00:09:34.927
He was just a good guy.

00:09:34.927 --> 00:09:36.067
It was, it was nice to meet him.

00:09:36.067 --> 00:09:37.356
He was super nice.

00:09:37.356 --> 00:09:42.886
His family was talking about doing the installation like we were out there digging and, you know, digging the hole and everything.

00:09:42.907 --> 00:09:44.116
And, his parents come up.

00:09:44.116 --> 00:09:45.947
They're like, what are you doing, you know, in our front yard?

00:09:45.947 --> 00:09:46.907
He hadn't told him, but.

00:09:47.667 --> 00:09:48.326
Oh my God.

00:09:49.184 --> 00:09:57.491
But no, everyone, his whole family was super nice, they were super excited and they couldn't believe that we would just show up and do something like we weren't asked to do it.

00:09:57.802 --> 00:09:58.072
You know?

00:09:58.101 --> 00:10:01.552
It was all Matt's idea, like we just did it to help someone out.

00:10:02.154 --> 00:10:02.394
Yeah.

00:10:02.394 --> 00:10:08.388
And I think that's the best part because the other thing that I left out was y'all actually go and lure it up whenever you drive by the area now.

00:10:08.388 --> 00:10:08.687
Right?

00:10:08.687 --> 00:10:08.957
Yeah.

00:10:08.957 --> 00:10:09.798
You dropped a few lawyers.

00:10:09.798 --> 00:10:10.187
I did.

00:10:10.192 --> 00:10:11.597
The other, I did last week actually.

00:10:11.597 --> 00:10:11.599
Yep.

00:10:11.917 --> 00:10:14.866
Uh, whenever we get a chance, we'll go over there and drop some more lures.

00:10:15.466 --> 00:10:21.106
What do the parents think of all the work that you're doing to try to just get this kid to stop just to be able to play this game?

00:10:21.706 --> 00:10:30.076
They were just really excited because it just didn't make sense, I guess, you know, you don't always see that in this world right now, that people will just go out of their way to, to go help somebody.

00:10:30.076 --> 00:10:33.047
but that makes life a lot better for all of us for doing that.

00:10:33.047 --> 00:10:34.547
So that's kind of why we did it.

00:10:35.152 --> 00:10:35.642
For sure.

00:10:35.642 --> 00:10:38.402
And so when you talked to him, like was he like a huge Pokemon fan?

00:10:38.402 --> 00:10:39.518
Like what did he say about that?

00:10:40.110 --> 00:10:41.399
He'd been playing for a long time.

00:10:41.399 --> 00:10:44.182
He was level 30 something when I, when we met him, so

00:10:44.187 --> 00:10:45.202
it's like 41 now.

00:10:45.202 --> 00:10:45.384
So he,

00:10:45.389 --> 00:10:48.082
yeah, he caught up, so, yeah.

00:10:48.682 --> 00:10:57.856
Well, and it's kind of interesting cuz the way that the game's actually set up, you can't, like once you have the trainer code, You really don't know who you're talking to, right?

00:10:57.856 --> 00:11:00.226
And there's no in-game chat or anything sitting.

00:11:00.226 --> 00:11:09.879
So like, if we're being honest with each other, you know, you get some in-game codes from Facebook groups or other means where you're run into somebody at the park, it's like, Hey, let's jump in together.

00:11:09.879 --> 00:11:12.179
But you know, you may or may not ever see him again.

00:11:12.482 --> 00:11:19.423
So to have kind of that sense of community wrap around somebody like that, his family was a little bit, baffled by the entire exchange.

00:11:19.509 --> 00:11:20.830
They were very grateful though.

00:11:21.429 --> 00:11:21.940
Oh yeah.

00:11:22.082 --> 00:11:27.269
There's a lot of people who talk about, you know, think about the people who are disabled, think about the people who can't play this game.

00:11:27.576 --> 00:11:29.527
You guys literally went outta your way.

00:11:29.830 --> 00:11:39.940
I don't know how much of a drive was it to get from point A to point B, but the fact that y'all even spent time building something, nominating going through eight months and let finally Niantic, thank you Niantic, approving a stop.

00:11:39.940 --> 00:11:41.033
Like, who does that?

00:11:41.330 --> 00:11:42.529
That's just crazy.

00:11:43.128 --> 00:11:48.152
But yeah, luckily it worked out, he just one town over, and not terribly far from where we live.

00:11:48.455 --> 00:12:00.623
You know, we didn't think it was too much of a burden To drive over there and then Rob's mechanical engineer and, and Jeff's uh, landscape architect and I'm an electrical engineer, which there's no electrical, but you know, just to help.

00:12:00.628 --> 00:12:03.052
Kept us, kept us from hitting any ground wire.

00:12:03.052 --> 00:12:03.352
There you go.

00:12:03.363 --> 00:12:04.072
There you go.

00:12:04.072 --> 00:12:04.633
There you go.

00:12:05.243 --> 00:12:06.863
That he could install some into it.

00:12:07.172 --> 00:12:07.442
Yep.

00:12:07.501 --> 00:12:07.711
Yep.

00:12:07.741 --> 00:12:14.902
That's a, I don't know, we just had that tinkering building like Jeff said, mindset, and then just wanted to help out a fellow Pokemon Go player.

00:12:15.504 --> 00:12:18.414
Is that what drove you to kind of do what you did just to help somebody out?

00:12:18.414 --> 00:12:19.504
Yeah, I'd say so.

00:12:19.802 --> 00:12:29.716
Saw his nomination, felt, just impressed to reach out to him and, light up his day and, It just felt like it was the kind thing to do, to reach out to'em and, and spread that joy, I guess.

00:12:30.287 --> 00:12:38.899
Well, and, for us, we've, got a pretty good community wrapped around us where we've got a group me that, every now and again you'll see a message come out about this raid or that raid.

00:12:38.899 --> 00:12:38.990
Mm-hmm.

00:12:39.230 --> 00:12:49.201
So we've, the big thing for, at least for I'll, I guess I'll speak for myself, is there's a sense of community wrapped around it, but when you see an individual where It's more challenging

00:12:49.201 --> 00:12:49.381
mm-hmm.

00:12:49.638 --> 00:12:56.871
to kind of establish that community, any opportunity that you can have to give them a little more opportunity to be involved, it's always a good thing.

00:12:57.467 --> 00:12:58.248
Without a doubt.

00:12:58.544 --> 00:13:08.865
And I think the fact that Niantic approved it on appeal, it begs the question, do you feel, cause I saw the Matthew's initial post, cause you asked about this back in June of 2022 initially, right?

00:13:08.865 --> 00:13:09.284
Matthew?

00:13:09.379 --> 00:13:09.600
Yes.

00:13:09.809 --> 00:13:10.230
That's great.

00:13:10.664 --> 00:13:13.855
You made a post on the Facebook asking like, Hey, you're trying to help this person out.

00:13:13.875 --> 00:13:17.745
You know, you were asking the basic question like, What's the chance of getting a library passed?

00:13:17.745 --> 00:13:25.065
You know, and some of the, I read the sponsors and most of'em were just like, well, it's technically property part Niantic, but then Niantic approves it.

00:13:25.725 --> 00:13:37.947
my question is this, from y'all's experience, just with doing what y'all just did just now, do you feel like maybe there's some leeway to maybe for trainers, like the person you helped that maybe the community as a whole we're not considering?

00:13:38.552 --> 00:13:53.856
I imagine, sometimes we submit those stops and we think it's just some faceless, machine in the background of Niantic, trying to, approve or disapprove, but there must be some human element to it where they consider those stops, that might actually benefit the community or benefit a person.

00:13:54.153 --> 00:13:55.712
That could be, very well the case here.

00:13:55.722 --> 00:13:56.613
I, I could see that.

00:13:56.917 --> 00:14:01.927
Well, and it's, pretty apparent that their goal, at least as of recently, is to get people out, right?

00:14:01.927 --> 00:14:02.287
Yeah, yeah.

00:14:02.287 --> 00:14:04.726
To, to, to promote that social element.

00:14:05.106 --> 00:14:05.226
Mm-hmm.

00:14:05.767 --> 00:14:09.114
But I, think there's, needs to be, Certainly exceptions made.

00:14:09.418 --> 00:14:11.937
in this case, we kind of had to go to him.

00:14:12.239 --> 00:14:38.643
And so the fact that at least somebody on the other side acknowledged that and realized, now mind you, there may have been some history there that after the hundredth time of us submitting it, I exaggerate a little bit, but again, it took, it took 11 months that after, after so long with the history, I think we at least built a story that it said, okay, either somebody is way dedicated to this storyline or there may be a legitimate need here.

00:14:39.246 --> 00:14:46.321
And it's easy to blow'em off and say like, oh, this person's just making up like, I think, Matthew said earlier, like, it's easy to just think like, oh, they're just trying to do a hostile stop.

00:14:46.326 --> 00:14:47.551
They just don't wanna go outside.

00:14:47.941 --> 00:14:48.360
lazy.

00:14:48.360 --> 00:14:48.571
You know?

00:14:48.571 --> 00:14:49.591
You've heard it all right?

00:14:50.041 --> 00:14:50.341
But

00:14:50.801 --> 00:14:51.860
Oh, we all want a couch.

00:14:52.191 --> 00:14:53.520
Let's not kid ourselves.

00:14:55.941 --> 00:14:56.410
Fair enough.

00:14:56.980 --> 00:14:57.431
Guilty.

00:14:57.451 --> 00:14:58.681
Mine's around the corner.

00:14:58.740 --> 00:15:00.240
Oh, I gotta go outside.

00:15:00.706 --> 00:15:01.515
Darn.

00:15:01.520 --> 00:15:04.936
I gotta go walk a couple steps in this heat or cold, depending on where you live.

00:15:05.355 --> 00:15:05.956
That's right.

00:15:05.961 --> 00:15:06.235
Yeah.

00:15:06.383 --> 00:15:14.472
But no, like there's a gray area to where trainers who, like the kid we're talking about, there's a gray area to where maybe, hey, we can maybe get something done.

00:15:14.767 --> 00:15:26.097
Maybe it allows us as reviewers to really consider, they try to think outside the box like you guys did cause all y'all did was just literally build a little free library, put it in front of the guy's house and unfortunately you had to wait eight or nine months, but it eventually did happen.

00:15:26.097 --> 00:15:26.427
Mm-hmm.

00:15:26.427 --> 00:15:27.057
Mm-hmm.

00:15:27.238 --> 00:15:27.807
That's true.

00:15:28.105 --> 00:15:30.292
Filled it with some books and hoped for the best.

00:15:30.892 --> 00:15:33.981
And the library's still used by the neighborhood, so it was a win-win.

00:15:34.072 --> 00:15:34.371
Yeah.

00:15:34.432 --> 00:15:36.292
He said kids use it, right?

00:15:36.442 --> 00:15:36.652
Yeah.

00:15:36.950 --> 00:15:38.629
Well guys, Let's move on to Pokemon Go.

00:15:38.629 --> 00:15:40.129
Let's talk about your experience with the game real quick.

00:15:40.129 --> 00:15:42.302
So when did y'all first start playing Pokemon Go?

00:15:42.908 --> 00:15:50.245
I think my thing says I started the day after it came out, so it's like July 6th, 2016, I think.

00:15:50.544 --> 00:15:54.097
My trainer is Route1 10 Triathlete.

00:15:54.097 --> 00:16:05.868
cuz I like to do triathlons and in Pokemon Ruby Sapphire and Emerald was the first generation where you encountered a triathlete on Route 110, so that's what I named myself is Route 110 Triathlete.

00:16:06.172 --> 00:16:08.121
I also played ingress though before that.

00:16:08.152 --> 00:16:08.211
Yeah.

00:16:08.451 --> 00:16:13.419
Uh, so I had some experience with the stops and everything and the experience of Niantic, setup.

00:16:13.716 --> 00:16:19.006
I had played Ingres and I think I'm level eight in ingress, but once I got Pokemon Go, all my attention went to that.

00:16:20.312 --> 00:16:20.792
Fair enough.

00:16:20.797 --> 00:16:21.361
Fair enough.

00:16:21.392 --> 00:16:22.423
What team are you real quick?

00:16:22.423 --> 00:16:22.663
Oh.

00:16:22.663 --> 00:16:24.072
Uh, I'm mystic

00:16:24.072 --> 00:16:24.432
Mystic.

00:16:24.437 --> 00:16:24.918
All right.

00:16:25.038 --> 00:16:25.648
One for the homies.

00:16:26.102 --> 00:16:26.207
Yeah.

00:16:26.557 --> 00:16:26.847
Yeah.

00:16:28.077 --> 00:16:28.827
You guys are all here.

00:16:28.827 --> 00:16:29.908
Stick to, yeah, we're all here.

00:16:30.597 --> 00:16:30.898
So,

00:16:31.092 --> 00:16:31.783
y'all already.

00:16:31.783 --> 00:16:32.923
We're all mystics here.

00:16:32.923 --> 00:16:33.163
All right.

00:16:34.092 --> 00:16:35.503
That is my favorite episode now.

00:16:37.227 --> 00:16:42.557
In our group, it is nice to have a few valor and instinct as well just to, so we can knock each other off the gym.

00:16:42.562 --> 00:16:43.278
Kick me out.

00:16:43.577 --> 00:16:44.357
Been in there four.

00:16:46.097 --> 00:16:46.847
Exactly.

00:16:46.847 --> 00:16:47.778
Fair enough, fair enough.

00:16:48.381 --> 00:16:53.610
This is Jeff, I'm DirtDiverG I started playing ingress also many years ago.

00:16:53.907 --> 00:17:01.432
I really loved the part where you could go and submit stops, that was really fun just to be able to do that, so I've got quite a few stops that I created back then.

00:17:01.736 --> 00:17:05.153
I started in July of 16 as well, out in California.

00:17:05.450 --> 00:17:10.596
I got a lot of Pokemon that I don't get here in Texas, which was nice back then.

00:17:10.893 --> 00:17:18.561
I actually put it down for about a good year and a half or so, and then Covid came along and our neighborhood actually didn't have many stops.

00:17:18.561 --> 00:17:18.563
Mm-hmm.

00:17:18.568 --> 00:17:21.172
And, uh, Matt and I have been working very hard.

00:17:21.471 --> 00:17:29.781
We've made it so there's like five gyms in our neighborhood now, so, um, but yeah, we've just been playing a lot, so it's been pretty fun.

00:17:30.086 --> 00:17:37.077
The other reason I play a lot is we've got a group within our church that's got 22 members on our group chat that all do raids and things like that together.

00:17:37.077 --> 00:17:37.377
So

00:17:37.377 --> 00:17:38.337
a lot of youth son.

00:17:38.337 --> 00:17:38.338
Yeah.

00:17:38.548 --> 00:17:39.387
Yeah, a lot of youth.

00:17:39.990 --> 00:17:44.559
Is it all like people who are local in the area or just people who like go to the same church or a combination of both?

00:17:45.265 --> 00:17:46.884
They were started out local in the area.

00:17:46.884 --> 00:17:46.974
Mm-hmm.

00:17:46.974 --> 00:17:52.585
But now we've got people all over the country once they start moving around and things like that, but everyone stays on, so,

00:17:52.585 --> 00:17:53.268
Oh that's awesome.

00:17:53.268 --> 00:17:53.657
yeah.

00:17:54.258 --> 00:17:56.798
So I'm not near as dedicated as these two.

00:17:57.545 --> 00:18:03.807
This is Rob, my, tag is Sveltl0, but, I started probably about the same covid time when I started.

00:18:04.103 --> 00:18:11.972
Played aggressively to get caught up I'm sitting right at like 41 now and, that doubling of XP has slowed the gears.

00:18:14.583 --> 00:18:17.343
I was walking in the morning and I'll play a fair bit then.

00:18:17.646 --> 00:18:23.376
There was a buddy that I was walking with and we'd go to a local park and walk in the morning and throw Pokeballs at things.

00:18:23.682 --> 00:18:30.508
That's kinda how I got into it and really what's, what's, I've got my kids involved now and it been fun chance to get out with them and relate a little bit.

00:18:31.112 --> 00:18:33.627
Is it like a family outing whenever you take your kids basically?

00:18:33.992 --> 00:18:37.656
Oh yeah, It's hard on the battery though, that mobile hotspot is brutal.

00:18:38.301 --> 00:18:38.932
Oh my gosh.

00:18:40.372 --> 00:18:40.942
You ain't lying

00:18:41.106 --> 00:18:44.376
When you're running like four phones off, it's like it's running slow.

00:18:44.376 --> 00:18:45.336
I'm like, yeah, I know.

00:18:49.102 --> 00:18:50.461
got four phones on one hotspot.

00:18:50.461 --> 00:18:50.862
That's a lot.

00:18:51.057 --> 00:18:53.114
Yeah, it's, it's a little rough.

00:18:53.423 --> 00:18:58.192
Now an older daughter's got one, so we're able to double up on the hotspot and that eases the pain a little bit.

00:18:58.807 --> 00:19:02.924
Well, I was gonna ask like, are you at the point to consider giving your kids phones or is that still too young?

00:19:03.375 --> 00:19:08.474
So my oldest, we've given a phone, and then usually my wife's pretty good to let her phone come with us.

00:19:08.474 --> 00:19:11.384
So now we've got three phones with quote unquote service.

00:19:11.688 --> 00:19:23.775
And then we've reached out to my in-laws and some others that when they get done with their phones anymore, the turn in rate is is low enough that they're willing to send them to us and we just install the game on it and the hotspot cross.

00:19:24.375 --> 00:19:26.085
Now you didn't play Ingress before though, right?

00:19:26.085 --> 00:19:26.894
No, I didn't.

00:19:27.545 --> 00:19:29.329
it's just uh, the other two who played Ingress.

00:19:29.474 --> 00:19:29.684
Yep.

00:19:29.690 --> 00:19:29.815
Yes.

00:19:30.285 --> 00:19:30.464
Yep.

00:19:30.464 --> 00:19:35.789
That's so awesome cuz a lot of the stereotypes for Ingress is they're little, I don't wanna say hard butts, but you know what I'm talking about.

00:19:35.789 --> 00:19:36.539
They're very stubborn.

00:19:36.539 --> 00:19:37.349
They adapt.

00:19:37.500 --> 00:19:43.259
It's kind of cool that now y'all are breaking all the molds for what people consider people who do Wayfarer, it's awesome.

00:19:43.857 --> 00:19:52.755
Yeah, I've noticed that on the forum or the Facebook group that we're in that seems a little polarized between those who play ingress, those who play Pokemon Go.

00:19:53.055 --> 00:20:00.307
Just a little friction in the group sometimes with nominations, so I always try to give positive feedback on that group as much as I can.

00:20:02.441 --> 00:20:05.558
So what is it about Pokemon Go that keeps y'all engaged?

00:20:05.558 --> 00:20:06.788
Like what do you like about the game?

00:20:07.394 --> 00:20:12.307
So like I mentioned, I do a lot of races, like running races or cycling or swimming and stuff.

00:20:12.609 --> 00:20:25.365
I have a Pokemon Go Plus ball that I use to, uh, I guess play the game as I train and run like this morning when a four mile run and caught a little over a hundred Pokemon just by clicking away on the button and spinning stops as I go.

00:20:25.664 --> 00:20:29.977
And that's really fun, it's sort of like when I finished the run, having a lottery scratch off ticket.

00:20:29.977 --> 00:20:31.386
Like, Ooh, what did I get in my run?

00:20:31.386 --> 00:20:32.017
I have no idea.

00:20:33.186 --> 00:20:36.517
And so look at it like, oh, I got a shiny just randomly.

00:20:36.517 --> 00:20:39.846
And I, I sent it to the group like on my run this morning, I caught a shiny.

00:20:40.147 --> 00:20:49.574
So that's just kind of fun to motivate me to continue running and training, but also keeping engaged in Pokemon Go, catching a, you know, a hundred or so, sometimes 200 on longer runs.

00:20:49.871 --> 00:20:51.461
And then I have kids too, and they play.

00:20:51.763 --> 00:20:58.465
They're younger than Rob's, but not by much and they enjoy playing with me when we go out and I'm like, oh kids, let's take over this, gym real quick.

00:20:58.465 --> 00:20:58.556
And

00:20:58.556 --> 00:20:59.846
Oh, the kids love the gyms.

00:20:59.875 --> 00:21:00.175
Yes.

00:21:00.181 --> 00:21:00.776
Yeah, for sure.

00:21:01.135 --> 00:21:01.980
Love the gyms!

00:21:01.980 --> 00:21:02.550
For sure!

00:21:02.550 --> 00:21:03.381
Oh, that's too cute.

00:21:03.498 --> 00:21:04.512
So that's why I keep playing.

00:21:04.512 --> 00:21:08.026
It's just, a fun, easy game for the family and for me.

00:21:08.328 --> 00:21:11.435
And I try to teach others how to play too when they are new to the game.

00:21:12.038 --> 00:21:16.074
I like the community, so just being able to play with everybody that we do in our group.

00:21:16.074 --> 00:21:23.423
and it's always funny, I, I remember the early days of go when you would drive around and you could just look at people parked at the spot and I'm like, they're doing a raid.

00:21:23.429 --> 00:21:25.733
Yeah, I know.

00:21:26.423 --> 00:21:26.664
I don't care.

00:21:31.148 --> 00:21:32.159
Keeping it real.

00:21:32.709 --> 00:21:33.548
Yeah, I know.

00:21:33.608 --> 00:21:41.739
No, uh, but it, it's fun that, that of community and, and my son, he's little, but he's started to play too, he always wants to catch guys, so.

00:21:41.919 --> 00:21:42.009
Mm-hmm.

00:21:42.253 --> 00:21:42.848
We do that.

00:21:42.848 --> 00:21:45.375
And then, the other thing I like is submitting stops.

00:21:45.381 --> 00:21:51.012
I like to just see him build up and you know, we kind of strategize, oh, we're gonna do one here now, we're gonna do one here now.

00:21:51.012 --> 00:21:51.133
Mm-hmm.

00:21:51.373 --> 00:21:53.435
And we kind of work together to, coordinate that.

00:21:54.035 --> 00:21:54.394
for me, hone.

00:21:54.394 --> 00:21:55.994
So the community's a big one, right?

00:21:56.315 --> 00:21:59.276
So, really involved with the youth at church.

00:21:59.276 --> 00:22:08.729
So, we're on GroupMe, and it's been fun because a lot of those raids, they're, they're getting up there that, you know, you need half a dozen people really to be able to lean on it and finish.

00:22:09.030 --> 00:22:15.076
So I'm able to go to a park, take my kids And kick out a, a GroupMe and say, all right guys, here's the deal.

00:22:15.374 --> 00:22:24.055
I need like four or five heavy headers so that my kids, can get through this and without fail getting that, it's, takes about five minutes for people to peel away from what they're doing.

00:22:24.055 --> 00:22:24.056
Mm-hmm.

00:22:24.275 --> 00:22:27.714
And so it's, it's been fun to see the, the sense community.

00:22:28.017 --> 00:22:32.247
Honestly, my kids keep me pretty involved and it is what, keeps me driven to keep playing.

00:22:32.847 --> 00:22:34.407
Now all y'all go to the same church, right?

00:22:35.038 --> 00:22:35.397
Yep.

00:22:35.788 --> 00:22:39.071
So do y'all do like a Pokemon Go night for churches for all the people who play?

00:22:39.674 --> 00:22:50.210
No, we don't do it as adults, but I know the kids do that like they'll get in with some other families, they'll all go for one of the community days or I was talking to one of the kids, he said he walked nine miles.

00:22:50.569 --> 00:22:51.890
One community day.

00:22:51.890 --> 00:22:52.430
Yeah.

00:22:52.759 --> 00:22:59.303
And so they'll all pile into a van and go to a downtown area where there's heavy amount of stops and they'll all go together.

00:22:59.303 --> 00:23:00.442
So I'm walking.

00:23:00.492 --> 00:23:01.103
Yeah, yeah.

00:23:01.212 --> 00:23:03.240
Or go start knocking out my gyms though.

00:23:03.390 --> 00:23:03.450
Yeah,

00:23:06.482 --> 00:23:11.186
Well, I was gonna say, a lot of the events are Sunday noon-ish, afternoon.

00:23:11.487 --> 00:23:15.626
And so it's not uncommon to see, okay, after church we're gonna meet at this park.

00:23:15.923 --> 00:23:21.472
And so you, you know, there's the exodus to that location, we all jump out and run through what's going on...

00:23:21.472 --> 00:23:23.962
get some Jesus in the morning and then go catch PIKA two in the afternoon.

00:23:23.962 --> 00:23:24.053
I

00:23:24.097 --> 00:23:24.428
There you go.

00:23:24.968 --> 00:23:27.307
Yeah, and we were actually joking I think on Easter.

00:23:27.607 --> 00:23:32.555
We went to church on Easter of course and then after that some of us were like, well, should we really go play Pokemon Go?

00:23:32.555 --> 00:23:35.734
And is it, you know, is it sort of keeping, it sounds like.

00:23:36.065 --> 00:23:42.008
We're literally going to hatch some eggs and take over other gyms that are, you know, currently have eggs.

00:23:42.008 --> 00:23:42.458
So it's like,

00:23:42.458 --> 00:23:46.117
It was like a very conflicting, cuz you felt like Easter should be all about Jesus the entire day.

00:23:46.117 --> 00:23:46.508
Right.

00:23:46.508 --> 00:23:46.657
And

00:23:46.657 --> 00:23:46.748
Right.

00:23:46.813 --> 00:23:49.718
all of a sudden, like, uh, I kind of wanna play Pokemon Go at the same time.

00:23:49.718 --> 00:23:50.325
Yeah, that's true.

00:23:50.325 --> 00:23:51.555
We just take the family with you.

00:23:51.559 --> 00:23:53.897
Yeah, that's a family fun thing.

00:23:54.555 --> 00:23:55.005
There you go.

00:23:55.005 --> 00:23:55.515
There you go.

00:23:55.811 --> 00:23:58.448
Before Pokemon Go, did y'all have any experience with Pokemon?

00:23:59.048 --> 00:24:00.188
I played on the Switch.

00:24:00.188 --> 00:24:02.167
Well, I played Game Boy back in the day.

00:24:02.198 --> 00:24:02.708
Yeah, same.

00:24:02.887 --> 00:24:07.515
And then I, went on a, pretty good, gap and then started playing again on the switch.

00:24:07.814 --> 00:24:12.463
I played on the Game Boy on a flight to Hawaii, I remember that specifically.

00:24:12.463 --> 00:24:13.963
I played the, what was the original one?

00:24:13.963 --> 00:24:14.473
It was like...

00:24:14.473 --> 00:24:15.163
red and blue.

00:24:15.163 --> 00:24:15.584
Red and blue.

00:24:15.943 --> 00:24:20.806
I played blue and then all of my knowledge between that and Pokemon Go was in Smash Brothers.

00:24:20.895 --> 00:24:21.195
Smash.

00:24:21.405 --> 00:24:21.695
Yeah.

00:24:25.635 --> 00:24:26.685
Good old at you.

00:24:26.685 --> 00:24:27.316
That's funny.

00:24:27.316 --> 00:24:28.929
Pika! Pika!.

00:24:28.949 --> 00:24:29.239
Yeah.

00:24:29.618 --> 00:24:29.919
yeah.

00:24:29.919 --> 00:24:31.209
Dropping lightning bolts.

00:24:31.213 --> 00:24:32.219
Uhhuh, I'm fan.

00:24:33.778 --> 00:24:36.756
I think for me, I'm probably a little more, astute with Pokemon.

00:24:37.286 --> 00:24:49.519
I've, kept up with all the games from the original Game Boy ones started on Game Boy Color, that was the Pokemon Yellow, and then Game Boy Advanced with Emerald and, you know, Ruby Sapphire and then I had a Ds that had diamond and pearl.

00:24:49.823 --> 00:24:52.972
Then I think I got X and Y after that and black and white.

00:24:53.270 --> 00:24:56.121
I had the cards growing up when I was in middle school.

00:24:56.421 --> 00:24:57.290
I had a bunch of cards.

00:24:57.290 --> 00:25:02.421
I have no idea where they are now, but every time I see someone post like, oh, this card's worth a hundred bucks, like, I had that card.

00:25:05.958 --> 00:25:14.198
And then with my kids, the TV shows are very kid friendly, so those are some of their favorite TV shows, so I've kept up and watched all the new ones that come on Netflix now.

00:25:14.528 --> 00:25:22.574
And so whenever there's a new Pokemon released in Pokemon Go and someone like Mispronounces it, like, no, it's pronounced this, this is the way they said it in the show.

00:25:25.523 --> 00:25:26.577
So what's y'alls favorite?

00:25:26.577 --> 00:25:27.087
Pokemon.

00:25:27.087 --> 00:25:28.688
Tyranitar all the way.

00:25:28.983 --> 00:25:30.397
I'm a junkie for the fire.

00:25:30.693 --> 00:25:34.503
Every time I played it was like didn't need any of that water grass type stuff.

00:25:35.584 --> 00:25:38.284
Gimme something that can throw a fireball and I'm good.

00:25:39.739 --> 00:25:41.618
So you'd be the fire gym leader, basically?

00:25:41.618 --> 00:25:43.894
Oh man! Me and Cyndaquil, we were great friends.

00:25:44.479 --> 00:25:45.798
Oh, okay.

00:25:45.798 --> 00:25:45.799
Okay.

00:25:45.907 --> 00:25:51.040
You say that when growing up, remember the first Pokemon I ever chose in Pokemon red and blue, I chose Bulbasaur.

00:25:51.391 --> 00:25:54.857
And so it always just said Bulbasaur is my favorite up to Venusaur.

00:25:55.153 --> 00:25:59.769
So that was probably my go-to in, in picking anything that's probably my favorite quote Pokemon.

00:26:00.366 --> 00:26:01.967
So what got y'all into Wayfarer?

00:26:01.987 --> 00:26:03.936
Like why do y'all decide to do Wayfarer?

00:26:04.534 --> 00:26:13.140
I think for me, when I got to the point where I can start submitting stops and I was like, oh, this seems like a good way you know, once you review so many stops, you can upgrade your nomination.

00:26:13.443 --> 00:26:17.622
So I thought this was a good way to get my nominations to pass quicker.

00:26:17.929 --> 00:26:26.214
And then I sort of noticed that, when Jeff would submit a stop every now and then I would see his come up like I thought, okay, cool, let me just five star Jeffs of course, even, yeah.

00:26:26.325 --> 00:26:30.605
Even if it's a picture out of the car or, you know, with his finger in a way or something.

00:26:32.285 --> 00:26:33.434
Our stops in our neighborhood.

00:26:33.731 --> 00:26:38.048
So, thought it was just a good way to continue creating our stops around our neighborhood essentially.

00:26:38.652 --> 00:26:48.402
I loved it in ingress, being able to submit stops, and I've got a ton that got approved and I loved just seeing it keep building, you know, every time you get that approval you're just like, yeah, all right.

00:26:48.402 --> 00:26:49.949
You know, there's a new, place to go.

00:26:49.949 --> 00:26:52.619
So I was actually chomping at the bit, what was it, level 38?

00:26:52.828 --> 00:26:53.378
You have to be?

00:26:53.682 --> 00:26:57.261
I think when we got it, It had to be 40 at the time, but I think now it's 30.

00:26:57.501 --> 00:26:57.682
Is it?

00:26:57.682 --> 00:26:58.612
Well, for me it was 38.

00:26:58.612 --> 00:26:59.122
Okay.

00:26:59.122 --> 00:26:59.123
Okay.

00:26:59.211 --> 00:27:04.011
So yeah, I couldn't wait to get to level 38 so I could start doing it again and that's the reason I got on.

00:27:04.311 --> 00:27:07.942
And then Wayfarer, I got on because I could start upgrading stops.

00:27:07.942 --> 00:27:08.031
Mm-hmm.

00:27:08.061 --> 00:27:08.481
Mm-hmm.

00:27:08.751 --> 00:27:16.759
That was kind of the motivation there to, and yeah, again, I saw, you know, stops nearby that it was fun to go approve those and just keep seeing it build up and up.

00:27:17.058 --> 00:27:21.511
And just for an example, our neighborhood had what, two gyms and two stops?

00:27:21.541 --> 00:27:22.051
Yeah.

00:27:22.051 --> 00:27:27.808
Like at the start of Covid and now we've got seven or eight gyms and 10 or 12 stops.

00:27:27.808 --> 00:27:29.119
and probably six more on the way.

00:27:29.125 --> 00:27:30.199
Yeah, for sure.

00:27:30.243 --> 00:27:30.723
wow.

00:27:30.723 --> 00:27:30.993
Dang.

00:27:31.114 --> 00:27:32.644
you've been putting in work for this, basically?

00:27:32.644 --> 00:27:33.176
Yeah.

00:27:33.413 --> 00:27:33.683
Yep.

00:27:33.683 --> 00:27:34.433
Been a lot of fun.

00:27:34.463 --> 00:27:36.324
Oh, it's nice to drive through their neighborhood.

00:27:37.673 --> 00:27:40.104
You can fill your bag really easy.

00:27:41.630 --> 00:27:49.537
We all live really close to each other in general, but Jeff and I live within walking distance and Rob just on the other side of the major road from us, so he's not too far.

00:27:49.836 --> 00:27:53.731
You know, when it alters your drive route home, then they've done a good job.

00:27:55.741 --> 00:28:00.842
I have seen more and more folks whose names I don't know, attack our gyms or Brad to our gyms.

00:28:00.842 --> 00:28:01.951
Like, who is this guy?

00:28:01.951 --> 00:28:03.811
I don't know him taking over my gym.

00:28:04.112 --> 00:28:04.682
Thank you.

00:28:04.682 --> 00:28:06.805
But who is this?

00:28:07.402 --> 00:28:08.332
Well, very cool guys.

00:28:08.332 --> 00:28:09.662
So, my last question is this.

00:28:09.666 --> 00:28:13.884
So if y'all could change something about Wayfarer, if y'all could improve it, what would that be like?

00:28:13.884 --> 00:28:16.025
What would y'all tell Niantic to try to change?

00:28:16.625 --> 00:28:19.734
I guess the ability to have upgrades quicker.

00:28:20.035 --> 00:28:23.801
I feel like it often takes a whole lot of approvals to get it up there

00:28:23.801 --> 00:28:25.751
like, it feels very lopsided.

00:28:26.051 --> 00:28:29.801
I've submitted some and they just sit there for months.

00:28:29.922 --> 00:28:29.981
Yeah.

00:28:30.102 --> 00:28:40.321
And then another, like, sometimes I'll submit a stop and I understand it's because there's really heavy cell phone traffic in the area and there's no stops and all of a sudden it'll get approved in six days.

00:28:40.622 --> 00:28:48.075
It's kind of strange that way, so maybe explaining that why some get approved so fast and some just sit there for a long time.

00:28:48.075 --> 00:28:48.134
Yeah.

00:28:48.134 --> 00:28:57.451
A little more transparency cause even on the forums and the Facebook group, there's some direction and guidelines and some hard rules for sure, but still it's a little bit of guesswork

00:28:58.050 --> 00:29:02.679
Well, guys, thank you for the work y'all done for helping bless this trainer with a Pokestop.

00:29:02.976 --> 00:29:09.459
And maybe for us as Wayfarers, maybe we need to cause and pause a little bit and think about the humanity behind the screen.

00:29:09.459 --> 00:29:09.818
Right?

00:29:10.123 --> 00:29:16.222
There's people who don't have as much, and as you said with the kid, he got into a car accident, he can't move around.

00:29:16.522 --> 00:29:17.692
I think there's some wiggle room.

00:29:17.692 --> 00:29:30.115
I think hopefully this episode shows that we need to maybe look behind the screen, look beyond just coal, look beyond just rejection, and look at the possibility that maybe there's a trainer just like this little kid just now that we're maybe missing.
